SANJOY GHOSE LADAKH WOMEN WRITERS’ AWARD

2011-12

Charkha Development Communication Network announces the Ladakh Women Writers’ Awards to invite writings on the social aspects of Ladakh’s heritage: its cultural, historical and natural wealth, as viewed by the people of Ladakh themselves

ABOUT THE AWARDS

There are three Awards, carrying a Citation and cash prize of Rs 5000/- each. The three Awardees may be taken through a mentoring process that includes guidance by a senior writer, likely to be based in the same location as the applicant; and ongoing editorial inputs by Charkha.

SUBJECT

The Awards encourage women from Ladakh to interact with their people and write about their views on the changes sweeping through Leh and Kargil that are impacting the way of life of the people; and their vision for Ladakh in the coming years.

Themes may cover, among others:

Ø Change in the culture / livelihood / education / environment of Leh / Kargil;

Ø Role of the people of Ladakh in managing this change to protect the traditional wisdom and environmental heritage of the Ladakh region;

Ø Successes achieved by individuals / groups in improving the quality of life of the people of Leh / Kargil by embracing the contemporary without foregoing the traditional

AWARD REQUIREMENTS

Each Awardee is expected to write six articles on their chosen theme in their preferred language: English, Hindi, Urdu or Ladakhi. The writings, of 700-1200 word length each, must be accompanied by photographs. The six writings must be completed by June 2012.

Charkha retains the right to use and reproduce the Award articles as Charkha Features, acknowledging the writer. The writings of the Awardees will be sent for publication to national and state-level newspapers and magazines and in websites, by Charkha’s Feature Service in English, Hindi and Urdu.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERION

§ The Award is open to women from Leh and Kargil above the age of 18 years

§ Writers, teachers, tourist guides, social activists, professionals or students, living in Ladakh or outside can apply

Awardees of previous Ladakh Women Writers’ Awards are not eligible.

The following attachments are to be sent with the Application Form:

1. A note on the theme on which you wish to write, in 250 to 500 words

2. Two samples of your writings (whether published or not) on any social or development issues

3. Curriculum Vitae

4. Two References (not related to the applicant) with their contact details

5. Two photographs of yourself

ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS

The Awards will be announced at Charkha’s Founders Day function in New Delhi on December 07, 2011. The Awardees will be invited to receive the Awards and their costs will be reimbursed as per Charkha’s rules.
